Today, I sat in my cell, thought about my students, and said a silent prayer for a visit from the ICRC.

International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights laws are the framework for all PSOs.

Understanding these laws and how they relate to specific situations will help you plan and respond effectively in conflict situations. Gender-based violence and human rights violations are weapons of war, and we can only combat them if we understand their basis.
Module 5: GENDER, HUMAN RIGHTS, INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN LAW
Time
Approximate Time to Complete Module:
3 hours (with break)

Goals
  • Participants will know that there is strong grounding in international law for the respect for women's human rights;
  • Participants will understand how IHL and HR laws and standards are relevant to PSOs;
  • Participants will understand that women and men in affected populations may not always respond or react in ways that they will predict (or that peacekeepers would assume are 'normal');
  • Participants will have an understanding of gender-based violence as both a violation of human rights and a reflection of inequality between women and men;
  • Participants will understand that respect for women's human rights has both individual and collectives implications (for their personal behaviour as well as the programmes and policies of their organisation).
