Today, I sat in my cell, thought about my students, and said a silent prayer for a visit from the ICRC.

Who you are determines how you are affected.

The impact of war and armed conflict varies greatly, depending on the gender of the affected individual. Men, women, boys and girls suffer, contribute and resist differently, according to their gender.

Understanding this variance will helps us know how to respond and act.
Module 5: GENDER, HUMAN RIGHTS, INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN LAW
Goals
  • Participants will know that there is strong grounding in international law for the respect for women's human rights;
  • Participants will understand how IHL and HR laws and standards are relevant to PSOs;
  • Participants will understand that women and men in affected populations may not always respond or react in ways that they will predict (or that peacekeepers would assume are 'normal');
  • Participants will have an understanding of gender-based violence as both a violation of human rights and a reflection of inequality between women and men;
  • Participants will understand that respect for women's human rights has both individual and collectives implications (for their personal behaviour as well as the programmes and policies of their organisation).
